The March girl
A guide to uggs on bare legs and sentimental perfumes, saying goodbye to winter and welcoming in spring.
"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade." ― "Great Expectations" Charles Dickens
Happy March my angels! Welcome to my monthly guide.
Since winter is my favorite season, I’ve been really sad thinking about the end of cold weather, but I must confess putting this post together got me pretty excited for spring. Maybe switching my daily chai latte for a daily coconut milk matcha latte won’t be that bad after all.
Today I’m going to show you what March is going to look like for me.
March scents:
Personally, the winter to spring transition is a time that begs for scents that almost make me want to cry. L’eau papier by Diptyque (notes of mimosa, blonde wood and rice steam) and Chêne by Chloé (notes of oak leaves, lily of the valley, orange flower, sandalwood, vanilla, etc) are the ones that fall under that category for me. The reason why they make me so emotional is very specific, but since you’re here I’ll tell you anyway.
A couple springs ago I went on a road trip to Alabama and I basically had the best time of my life. I have only really good memories from that trip and both these fragrances take me back there. Chloé’s Chêne smells like my first night in Orange Beach, like my first time sleeping with the window open that year. I went to bed exhausted from the 15 hour drive and then swimming in the ocean all day. My cheeks and shoulders felt warm but my feet were cold. Palo alto was playing on the tv, the fan was on and the windows were open but I was wearing a sweatshirt under my blankets. I could hear the waves crashing down at the beach. I slept like a baby and this fragrance gives me the same exact comfort I felt that night. It smells of nature and warmth and nights of sleep so peaceful that you don’t even dream. I also assigned it a lotion that I think would pair well, not much to say here just sweet almond and coconut to enhance the warm day feeling.
Now, on the other end of this little spectrum is Diptyque’s L’eau papier. This is basically everything I’ve just described but in reverse. L’eau papier smells like the comfort of my first morning back home from that trip. Coming back to the breezy midwest after spending a week in the southern heat. I woke up at 6am for no reason and watched the cold sun rise over the lake that was nowhere near warm enough to swim in yet. Looking down at my legs I could see the tan from my beautiful days at the beach but I had chills all over my body from going outside wearing shorts. I can see where the fragrance gets its name, there’s definitely an inky quality to it, followed by this weird feeling of relief. The lotion I assigned to it smells exactly like you would expect it to (soy milk and honey). This one I have a lot to say about, but I’ll spare you and just leave you with the knowledge that it smells sweet and pairs well with the fragrance.
March wardrobe:
Recently I’ve been really into 90s crewneck sweaters, so these are going to be a staple in my everyday outfits this month. As a baseball fan who’s really excited about baseball season, the MLB ones have a special place in my heart, but there are so many other styles to pick from and believe me when I tell you I have an opinion about every single one. I’ll spare you here too and keep this short. The key is to buy them second hand (you can find some on eBay or etsy). They look exponentially cooler when they look like they’ve been passed down or mean something to you, even if they don’t. Doesn’t matter if it has a college team or just a cheeky little phrase, the charm comes entirely from the lived in look. These are really easy to style and you can get very different vibes depending on the rest of your outfit. My personal favorite is the Jane Fonda way: cute little hairstyle, glasses and a pair of jeans.
Maybe this is just the end of winter induced nostalgia talking but I’m currently obsessed with vintage cheer uniforms. Regardless of whether or not this is just me longing for my own cheerleading days, I think a cute turtleneck sweater goes great with a little pleated skirt. The slouch socks are a must here and the sneakers are really what give it that sporty vibe (which in my head is what makes it a March outfit and not an October outfit). The scrunchie might be a little bit of a stretch if you’re not interested in cosplaying Sandy from Grease, but I think they belong here honestly.
This is very basic (sorry), but I couldn’t talk about March outfits without mentioning my favorite thing to wear: mini uggs with micro shorts. It just makes me happy, and depending on the choice of shorts + top combo here they either make me feel like Bella Hadid or Penny from the Big Bang theory (and honestly I’m good with both). I love wearing Uggs so every year the boots prevail for as long as the weather allows.
March watching:
It’s safe to say Yellowjackets has taken over my life. I will give you a better watch list next month, but for now this is all I can think about. I’m won’t say anything about the plot because If you’ve never heard of this show I suggest going into it blind, but definitely check content warnings first cause it does get a little intense. I will tell you that I have been having the time of my life waiting for a new episode every Friday and should totally join me on this journey if you feel compelled to. Moving on to Dawson’s Creek, it’s my perfect warm weather show. Every spring I start my yearly rewatch and it never gets old. It’s comparable to Gilmore girls in the sense that it has no big plot, just little characters living their little lives. I love it for the vibes mostly and I think it’s a great way to get yourself in the spring mood.
March wishlist:
Self explanatory. If you’ve tried any of these please let me know in the comments. The fact that the glossier perfume hasn’t even been officially announced yet and it’s already on my wishlist is a little embarrassing, but that’s just who I am…
Thanks for reading :)
Please leave any thoughts and opinions in the comments. For now I’m only posting monthly guides, but if there’s anything different you’d like to see here in the near future definitely let me know!
I hope you enjoyed this post and thank you for subscribing <3
I’ll see you in April.
This is so perfect and I think I need a sample of Chloé’s Chêne….
The Akro perfume is not the longest lasting but smells so amazing that I don't care! Perfect vanilla but with a twist scent
