“I feel like a time traveler: June, july, August. Summer dissolves in my mouth and I can’t remember what it tasted like” - Zoe Lianne
I think June is a very sweet name for a baby, especially if it’s a girl. Although I currently have no desire to have any children of my own I still keep a list of baby names in my notes app just in case I change my mind someday, and June is one of my top picks. I like it when short first names are paired with long middle names. If I had a baby I think her middle name would be either Elizabeth or Annabelle and her first name would be either June or Lila. I really like Violet as well but then if I were to name a baby Violet I wouldn’t want her to have a middle name cause I think it’s really special on its own.
Anyway, rambling aside, here are my June thoughts and feelings.
Summer melancholy
June has arrived and soon summer will follow. I tend to have very vivid dreams all throughout the year, but during the summer my usually harmless dreams become so bad that I just can’t sleep through them. Heat induced nightmares are actually a thing (you can read about it here) and I am a victim. I dream in very bright colors and excruciating detail, every morning I wake up feeling like I’ve just returned from a second life. So between sleepless nights and my severe fear of bugs, I do admit that summer is just not my favorite time of the year. However, I am very easily distracted by shiny things, the silver linings of it all, so every year I manage to make it to September unharmed and having had a good enough summer.
It’s the little things, always. Like having my hips and collarbones adorned with tan lines, it can feel like a prize at times, something I’ve earned because I left my bedroom and spent time in the sun. I take my sun baked shoulders and swollen lips as evidence of a good time. I find joy in having warm and sticky evenings sweetened by cherries and peaches and plums and a big pitcher of sweet tea. I douse myself in scents of orange blossom and lilac and lychee and I cover my bare skin with shimmers and oils so I can feel like a garden fairy or a water nymph. I brush my hair 100 times before I go to bed and I sleep with my windows opened so I can talk to the moon when I inevitably wake up from a bad dream. I like to put down the memoirs and essays and prioritize weird little short stories and long tiresome novels about made up worlds that are so full of detail you almost believe it to be true.
I’m not a summer girl, but I can be very good at finding the little things that help me pretend. So if you’re also not too fond of the heat, that’s my only advice, to find those things, and delight in them until it’s over.
